Safety Glass. Glass shall be installed so that the identification mark is legible. Windshields. The glass in the windshield shall have a horizontal gradient band starting slightly above the line of the operator's vision and gradually decreasing in light transmission to 20 percent or less at the top of the windshield. Stirrup Steps. There shall be at least one folding stirrup step or recessed foothold and suitably located handles on each side of the front of the body for easy accessibility for cleaning the windshield and lamps. Windows. Glass in all side windows, doors, and rear windows shall be AS-2 laminated safety sheet. Passenger compartment windows shall be AS-2 or 3 and: Operate freely; Open 9 to 10 1/2 inches from the top only and provide an emergency exit of a least 9 by 22 inches, except that there may be a window that does not open to 9 by 22 inches located next to a side emergency door; Have all exposed edges of glass banded; Be free of window guards or bars either on the inside or outside; and Be metal framed split sash. The window directly to the left of the driver: Shall be split; Shall slide forward and backward in weather-stripped grooves; and May have an adjustable driver's vent window. Windshield Wipers. Two automatic, wipers with blades at least 14 inches long with nonglare arms and blades shall clean the maximum possible area of the windshield. The windshield wiper blades and arms shall be heavy duty. Windshield Washers. Electric windshield washers shall be installed by the body manufacturer. The liquid container may not be less than 70 ounces and shall be of rigid plastic mounted under the hood. Transit-style vehicles may have the liquid container in an enclosed compartment in the driver's area.
